The Vienna Town Green

AmphitheatreThe Town Green in Vienna, Virginia is located where Maple Avenue intersects the W&OD Bike Trail and Mill Street. The Town Green was dedicated in May, 2007 after many years of hard work including the Town’s acquisition and demolition of a building that stood on the corner of Maple Avenue and Mill Street thus completing the 2.25 acre site.

This open space is a true “green” asset as it provides a unique public space for residents to enjoy events such as the 2010 Concerts on The Green which run from mid May through August on Friday and Sunday nights. All concerts are free so you can bring a blanket and sit on the grass to enjoy entertainers including the U.S. Navy Band, Redstone, MOJO, Dagmar and The Seductones, Fat Chance, and the Kingsley Winter Band.

There is also a public restroom building.

Original Vienna LibraryAlso located on the property is the Original Vienna Library dating back to 1897, which was moved to this site in the 1970′s and has been carefully restored to resemble it’s life in the mid 20th century (including a card catalogue that still has names of current residents).IMG_8680

There are stacks of old books to take a look at and the library is open 1-4 the first Sunday of every month and staffed by informative volunteers. This place is a little piece of Vienna history so you will need to cross the street to go to the real Fairfax County Library, Patrick Stewart on Maple Avenue.

IMG_7133The Vienna Town Green connects with the Freeman House located on Church Street. This building also is of historic significance and was built in 1859. The main level has a country store selling “historic” reproductions and books on Vienna and Virginia history. Freeman House, Vienna

The Town Green and Freeman House properties are very well maintained and feature open lawn spaces for many annual functions, extensive flower gardens, stone walls, and plenty of trees. The Vienna Town Green is handicap accessible with designated parking on Mill Street.

W&OD Bike Trail at Church Street in ViennaThe W&OD bike trail passes along the western side of the Town Green and the Freeman House.

According to the official Town of Vienna web site, this is also a WiFi Hot-Spot offering free Internet access. Users can log-in using Vienna Gov’t Sponsored Free WiFi for the SSID. SSID stands for “Service Set Identifier” and is a unique ID for naming a wireless network. All wireless devices attempting to communicate with each other must share the same SSID. — You will have to confirm this yourselves… but I plan to check it out.

We are lucky to be living in Vienna, VA.
